Before he became a judge, Traver had about 10 years of experience as a private practice attorney. In that time, he argued 3 jury trials, 2 non-jury trials to completion. He specialized mainly in complex commercial litigation in both state and federal courts, including contracts, real estate, loans, malpractice, personal injury and fraud. He also handled juvenile law.

He was also a law clerk for the U.S. District Court (2001-2003) in Orlando. Before that, was a Summer Associate in a Chicago law firm.
